Bifocal Lenses
Two vision zones in one lens – for distance and near vision
What are Bifocal Lenses?
Bifocal lenses contain two different prescription powers – one for distance vision in the upper portion and one for near vision in the lower portion. They were invented by Benjamin Franklin and have been helping people see clearly at multiple distances for over 200 years.
Bifocals are commonly prescribed for people with presbyopia – the age-related loss of near focusing ability that typically begins in your 40s.
How Bifocals Work
Upper Zone
The larger upper portion is for distance vision – driving, watching TV, seeing across the room.
Lower Zone
The smaller lower segment is for near vision – reading, using your phone, close-up work.
Visible Line: Bifocals have a visible line separating the two zones. If you prefer no visible line, consider progressive lenses.
