Tri-Focal Lenses: Flat-Top 28mm

Three vision zones in one lens: distance, intermediate, and near correction

Flat-Top 28mm Trifocal

How Tri-Focal Lenses Work

Trifocals come in a variety of designs. Flat top trifocals are the most widely used form. The added segment provides clear vision at arm's length distance, the area that is usually blurred for bifocal wearers. Trifocals are available in all lens materials.

Trifocal lenses are similar to bifocals, except that the two focal areas are separated by a third middle area with intermediate focus correction, used for intermediate vision, e.g. computer distance. This lens type has two segment lines, dividing the three different correcting segments.

Three Vision Zones

Distance (Top)

For seeing far away. Eyes gravitate straight ahead or over the segments when gazing at distant objects.

Intermediate (Middle)

For computer distance (18-24 inches). Focus through this area when looking at arm's length.

Near (Bottom)

For reading up close. Contains the near correction for books, newspapers, and fine print.

Fitting Trifocals

Trifocals are fitted a bit higher than bifocals, with the top line of the intermediate area placed even with the pupil. This ensures optimal viewing through each zone.

Executive-D (E-D) Trifocal

An E-D trifocal has a distance correction along the top half, separated from the intermediate correction by a line across the full width (Executive style), with a D half-moon segment for near correction in the lower half.

Ideal for: Someone who must see at intermediate distance in a wide field while also seeing clearly close-up and in distance. Example: TV production person monitoring multiple screens while reading notes.
